Background

On July 1, 2003, the ATEX directive came into effect across the European Economic Community (EEC). This directive mandates that all electrical and mechanical equipment intended for use in hazardous areas must meet specific safety requirements.

Potentially explosive atmospheres occur where there is a risk of explosion due to mixtures of gases and air, vapors and air, dust and air, or other volatile combinations, such as petrol fumes.

Any electrical or mechanical equipment used in these areas must be designed and constructed to prevent the creation of ignition sources, such as sparks, hot surfaces, or static electricity, and eliminate all potential causes of combustion capable of igniting these mixtures.

Risk zones in environments with flammable gases or vapors range from AREA 0 (constant explosion risk) to AREA 1 (probable explosion risk) and AREA 2 (low risk, with any explosion risk present for a short duration).
